Deal with the present, disentangle from the past, and develop skills for the future.
At any age – from early adulthood to life’s end – stressful, frightening, and sad things happen. We might successfully ride these waves. But sometimes, sadness can build into depression, worry into anxiety. Prolonged stress can affect our health, and chronic or severe health problems can increase our stress levels. Unresolved loss saps energy and the capacity for joy. Addictions change our brains, feelings and behaviours. These things happen because we are not minds plus bodies – we are whole throbbing systems. So if one part goes awry, other parts are affected. To restore balance, we might turn to diet, exercise and medication. Psychotherapy too can help.
Is Psychotherapy for You?
In an individual psychotherapy session, you will be supported to speak freely about matters that are troubling you, without usual social constraints. We will discuss these things in a relaxed way, at your pace, and also explore your usual ways of coping. Later, we will set goals to address what you want from therapy. Individual therapy sessions last for 50 minutes, and are designed specially for you – to help you to work through your problems or conflicts to a place of acceptance or resolution. You will also be helped to develop skills needed to move forward.
In 2017, group psychotherapy will also be offered. These 8-week groups of 7-9 adults will be geared specifically to assist you to develop skills to ride life’s waves. You will learn strategies to nip anxiety or depression in the bud, or to help manage stress, loss, pain, chronic illness, or mild addiction to alcohol or sugar. And be supported by others while doing so. Many benefit from a combination of individual and group therapy – more details will be available early in the new year.
Cost: For those with a mental health plan, Medicare rebates are available for up to ten individual and ten group sessions per calendar year – the gap payment will be reduced for pensioners, and group therapy will involve a smaller gap than individual sessions.
Who am I?
I graduated as a clinical psychologist from Melbourne University over 30 years ago, and later completed a PhD at Monash. I have trained in cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic and mindfulness therapies for individuals and groups, and draw on each approach as needed. I have worked clinically in public sector mental health, a general hospital and private practice, and have taught medical students at Monash University. Away from work, I enjoy spending time with my adult children and grandchildren. And like to walk, garden, read and write.
