Health Checks Everyone Should Keep Up With

Looking after your health is important at every stage of life. However, many people delay visiting their GP, especially when they feel well or are busy with work, family and other commitments.
In this blog, Dr Rajinder Bhardwaj discusses the importance of regular health checks, how they can help detect early signs of illness and why staying up to date with screening and preventive care is an important part of long-term wellbeing.
The health checks you need will depend on your age, medical history, family history and lifestyle. In this blog, we look at some of the common health checks and screening programs available to people living in Victoria.
Blood Pressure and Heart Health
High blood pressure and high cholesterol may not cause noticeable symptoms, but they can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.
Your GP may review your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. They may also ask about your diet, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, weight and family medical history.
This information can help your GP assess your overall cardiovascular risk and recommend appropriate lifestyle changes, treatment or further testing.
Diabetes Assessment
Type 2 diabetes can develop gradually and may not cause symptoms in its early stages.
Your GP can assess your risk by considering factors such as your age, weight, family history, cultural background and lifestyle. A blood test may be recommended when appropriate.
Early identification can help reduce the risk of complications and support better long-term health.
Bowel Cancer Screening
Australians aged 45 to 74 may be eligible to complete a free bowel cancer screening test every two years through the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.
The test is completed at home and looks for small amounts of blood in the bowel motion that may not be visible.
Speak with your GP if you have bowel symptoms or a family history of bowel cancer, as you may require different screening or further investigation.
Cervical Screening
Women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74 are generally recommended to complete a Cervical Screening Test every five years.
The test checks for human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause changes to the cells of the cervix.
Your GP can explain the available testing options and advise when your next screening test is due.
Breast Screening
Women over the age of 40 can access free breast screening through BreastScreen Victoria every two years. Women aged 50 to 74 are actively encouraged to participate in regular screening.
A screening mammogram can help detect breast cancer before it can be seen or felt.
Any new breast symptom, such as a lump, nipple change or unusual discharge, should be discussed with your GP rather than waiting for a routine screening appointment.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
A health assessment should also include your emotional and mental wellbeing.
Stress, anxiety, low mood, poor sleep and feeling overwhelmed can all affect your health. Your GP can provide a confidential space to discuss what you are experiencing and help you access appropriate support.
Immunisations
Vaccinations remain important throughout adulthood.
The vaccines recommended for you may depend on your age, medical conditions, occupation, pregnancy, travel plans and previous immunisation history.
Your GP can review your records and advise whether you are due for any vaccinations, boosters or catch-up doses.
Choosing the Right Health Checks
There is no single health assessment that is suitable for everyone.
The right checks for you will depend on several factors, including:
- Your age
- Your personal and family medical history
- Existing health conditions
- Your lifestyle and individual risk factors
- Any symptoms or changes you have noticed
Speaking with your GP can help you understand which health checks and screening programs are appropriate for you.
