Update for Geelong residents on the coronavirus

As of this morning, 7 February 2020, 15 cases of 2019-nCoV have been confirmed in Australia: 5 in Queensland, 4 in New South Wales, 4 in Victoria, and 2 in South Australia.

All of the cases in Australia have come from Wuhan except one in NSW who had contact in China with a confirmed case in Wuhan.

Importantly of the previously reported cases, 5 have recovered. The others are in a stable condition.

Questions about testing, and about the welfare of people with the virus, should be directed to state and territory health authorities.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Health Regulations Emergency Committee has declared the outbreak of 2019-nCoV a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

The Australian Government is taking a highly precautionary approach based on the latest and best medical advice.

What we are doing

The Government is providing advice to Australians about the novel coronavirus, based on the latest medical advice.

The advice of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for travel to mainland China is ‘level 4 – do not travel’.

On the advice of the AHPPC and the Communicable Diseases Network Australia, the Prime Minister applied the following travel restrictions to people entering Australia having left mainland China after 1 February 2020:

In addition the following isolation requirements apply:

  • if you have travelled to Hubei Province within the past 14 days, you must isolate yourself until 14 days after you left Hubei Province
  • if you have left or transited through mainland China on or after 1 February 2020 you must isolate yourself until 14 days after leaving China
  • if you have been in close contact with a confirmed case of novel coronavirus, you must isolate yourself for 14 days after last contact with the confirmed case

Importantly, these requirements apply to students attending childcare, school or higher education.

If you have any flu like symptoms, present to your local GP, advise the reception team that you have either traveled from China or have been in contact with someone who has.
